the engines, and then pulling the gearshift until he found the right gear to make the
vehicle move. Of course we know prior to the war we lived on the surface, but our
history states the surface became uninhabitable.
The war was over a hundred and fifty years ago. The planet was destroyed. The
atmosphere torn apart. And I know it was impossible to go outside. Back then we lived
in shelters connected to each other by tunnels. She nibbled at her lip, looking outside
as they moved on to the paved area where lines of vehicles moved slowly between the
tall buildings. I ve seen pictures in history books. Maybe I can get my hands on one to
show to you sometime.
Driving the vehicle didn t take much effort. Even through the tinted windows, the
glare hurt his eyes. There wasn t much out there worth looking at anyway, a gray world
filled with people who didn t seem to give each other the time of day. It wouldn t
surprise him at all if he could walk down their street and no one noticed the difference
in their physical appearance. Most everyone wore the dark sunglasses and seemed
intent on getting where they were going. Ran Mose could have hundreds of his
warriors up here, and none of these people would even know.
Reaching out, he brushed her hair behind her shoulder so that he could see her face.
Syndi turned and looked at him.
This visit of yours to your village will be short-lived, he told her. I ll come for
you tonight.
She shook her head. Already you have burns on your skin from the sun.
This isn t up for debate. She wasn t safe unless she was with him. He wouldn t
have any arguments. Offer whatever explanation that you wish to your people, but I
won t have you up here where I can t ensure your safety.

She pointed toward the front window. You need to get off this street. Turn right
up here and that will take you out of town. We ll find a side road and head out into the
dead lands.
Making note of the landmarks around him he would need to return for Roln and
Peg, and hopefully a few prisoners he followed her instructions. They drove in silence
until the city was behind them, and a dead world of sand and dirt surrounded them as
far as he could see. She guided him over the baked ground, somehow able to tell when
everything around them looked the same, which way to go until the small pond
glistened under the sun in front of them.
I ll get out here, she said, climbing into the back to get the box of water.
There wasn t much time. Leaving Roln and Peg in the home in Detroit alone for
very long wouldn t be safe. There were matters to discuss with Fern once he returned
home. The sooner he was brought up to date with everything concerning Ran Mose, the
better he d be at making a call as to what to do next. Finding Ran Mose, questioning
him, would have to be top priority.
Grabbing Syndi s wrist, he pulled her to him. She didn t put up much of a fight. No
matter that she felt the need to help her people, she wanted him. And he knew she
needed him.
Use this communicator, he told her, rubbing the band that was on her wrist with
his thumb. He could feel the rapid beat of her pulse when he touched her skin. If
anything goes wrong, contact me.
She nodded. I ll be fine.
You ll be better once I have you with me again. Pulling her into his arms, he
cradled her into his lap and then crushed his mouth over hers.
Syndi let out a small cry, opening to him, her arms wrapping around his neck as
she returned the kiss.
Running his fingers through her hair, he tangled them in the thick strands and
pulled. Her head fell back and he traced kisses down her cheek, to her chin, and then
tasted her flesh as he stroked her neck with his tongue.
God. He didn t want to let her go. Everything inside him screamed to turn this
vehicle around and force her to go back with him.
Tangling his fingers in her hair, he pulled her face inches from his, watching as she
panted for air. Her lashes fluttered over her eyes as she took a moment to focus up at
him.
You have four hours. Giving her that much time was dangerous.
She tried to shake her head but he gripped her hair and she couldn t move.
Too much is at risk. Her lips were wet and swollen from his kiss. I won t have
you coming back up here when the city is already looking for people from Undrworld.
He frowned, remembering that she d mentioned that before. Again, confirmation
